Outreach
This Parish's outreach is simply an expression of our belief in the Incarnation. It is a direct consequence of our faith that the Holy Spirit continues to live in human beings and that everyone has an obligation to every other living being. We positively look for ways in which we can serve those in our parish family but also those who do not worship here and, yet, have needs that we can help to meet.
This past year, we raised funds for Hannah House, DC's only transitional facility for homeless women and their children.
We provide ongoing donations to the Capital Area Food Bank.
Each year during the holidays, we participate in the Capitol Hill Group Ministry Christmas Angel Tree and Thanksgiving basket programs.
Our ministry extends deep into our community as the Parish of St. Monica and St. James provides meeting space for 20 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings each month, rehearsal space for the Lesbian & Gay Chorus of Washington, D.C. and for the ContactImprov dance group, and training space for Aikido and Tae Kwan Do classes. The Parish also provides space for many community action and education organizations, including The Havner Summer Camp.
In the past, we have provided space for Our Place DC (an organization helping women who have recently been released from prison); the Cub Scouts; a Jewish study group; the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (the nation's largest community organization of low and moderate-income families); the boards of the Washington Youth Choir (an after-school arts intervention program for disadvantaged high school students) and Higher Achievement (an after-school literacy program for middle school students); Sasha Bruce Youthwork (providing services for homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth and their families); U.S. Public Interest Research Group; the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions; and the Capitol Hill Learning Group.
