Mardi Gras party
Shrove Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Best party ever on Capitol Hill! The good times rolled in the Lower Parish Hall with masks and beads, jambalaya and king cake, and a bowl of potent parish punch!
Father Williams reminds us that even in Lent, every Sunday is a feast day... so remember that spirit and finish your leftover Mardi Gras goodies on Sunday!

Blest Zion, I love thee
All Saints' Day, November 4, 2008

At today's High Mass the Anthem Choir sang "Blest Zion, I love thee," a Shaker tune setting composed by our very own Chris Hoh! http://www.hohmademusic.com/
"Earth hath no treasures, sin hath no pleasures I would exchange for that peace which I feel:
A conscience unspotted, with confidence blessed, angels my guard, and the Lord's will my seal."

Annual celebration of St. James' Day
July 2008
On July 27 we had the traditional cookout in the church garden! It was great to see so many old and new friends enjoying each others' company amidst the summer sun, the welcome cool shade, and the delicious fixings! For some of the photos taken at the event, see our photo gallery.

The Vestry calls a new Priest-In-Charge
March 2008
The Vestry of the Parish of Saint Monica and Saint James is pleased to announce that it has extended a call to the Reverend Father Milton C. Williams, Jr. as priest-in-charge of the parish. The Vestry has just received word from the Bishop's office that the Bishop has consented to the call, and Father Williams has accepted the offer to serve our parish community as its new priest-in-charge.
The Reverend Milton C. Williams, Jr. is currently the Interim Rector at Saint Timothy’s Episcopal Church, Washington, D.C. Before being called to Saint Timothy’s, Fr. Williams was the Priest Associate for Pastoral Care and Outreach Ministries for Trinity Church, Wall Street, New York. Administrative supervision for Saint Paul’s shelter for men and John Heuss House drop-in shelter for adults was a part of Fr. Williams’ portfolio along with coordinating pastoral care with the Sisters of Saint Margaret. While at Trinity, Fr. Williams had led parish mission trips to Panama, Cuba, South Dakota, New Orleans, and, with the Diocese of New York, a mission trip to South Korea. Fr. Williams has served as a board member for Jacob Perlow Hospice, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, and Bailey House, New York. (Bailey House is New York
’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing for singles and families living with HIV/AIDS.)
Before going to Trinity in April 1999, Fr. Williams was the Associate Priest at the Historic Pohick Episcopal Church, Fairfax County, Virginia
. As the Associate at Pohick, Fr. Williams was the coordinator for youth ministries, missions and outreach, and music and liturgy. Fr. Williams served as an Executive Board member to the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, a volunteer chaplain for Hospice of Northern Virginia, and was an instructor for liturgy for the Leadership Program for Church Musicians in the Diocese of Washington.
Fr. Williams holds a Diploma in Anglican Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, Virginia, 1996; a Bachelors of Science degree from Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia, 1983; and a Master of Divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, 1987. While at Southern Seminary, he was appointed by both the Home and Foreign Mission Boards of the Southern Baptist Convention to serve as a missionary in Fairbanks, Alaska and South Brazil. In 1988, Fr. Williams was appointed to serve in Macau, Southeast Asia where he taught at Pui Ching Middle School and the University of Southeast Asia.
Fr. Williams is chaplain and member of Kappa Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and is chaplain for the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller. Fr. Williams was born in Suffolk, Virginia
, where his parents continue to reside. He is the eldest son of three children.
The Vestry is beginning to work out the details of this call with Fr. Williams and with the Diocese. We anticipate that Fr. Williams will be joining us within the next 4-6 weeks, depending on the completion of his interim term with the St. Timothy's community. We will keep this community apprised of his arrival date and all other important details as soon as they are finalized.
In the glory of the Risen Christ, we give thanks to you, our brothers and sisters, for your continuous prayers and support in these past many months. We have a promising, bold future ahead of us as a new community of faith on Capitol Hill and we rejoice that Father Williams is willing to commit his talents to us all.
The Peace of the Lord be with us always! Alleluia, alleluia!
Yours in Christ,
The Vestry of the Parish of Saint Monica and Saint James
